Application and Interview Process
Once you have submitted your on-line application your CV will be received by our recruitment team in Bristol. You should expect an email response from us within 14 days.
If you are successful then you will be invited to schedule a pre-screening appointment by phone. If you pass this stage you will be invited to attend a group interview held at our Central Support in Bristol or an international location. The interview process will run over a day and will consist of role play and group activities, company presentations and a one to one interview. There will also be plenty of opportunities to ask any questions you may have.
How will you know if you have been successful? You will receive an email within 7 days regarding the outcome of your interview. This will contain documents that detail your offer of employment and full information regarding the next steps. All offers of employment are subject to two satisfactory references.
What Happens Next?
The next step will be to obtain your C1/D Visa. This is an American crew visa that all Harding Retail colleagues are required to obtain to work on-board.
You will need to book an appointment with the US Consulate in the country you reside in. On the day of your appointment you will need to attend the US Consulate in person and you will be asked to produce a C1/D support letter that will be supplied by Harding Retail as proof of your reason for travel. As part of the Visa process the Embassy will conduct an Enhanced Disclosure check to ensure that you do not have any criminal history.
It is also a Maritime standard requirement that you complete a Seafarers Medical to ensure you are in a fit state to work on-board. If you fail to obtain a C1/D Visa or pass your Seafarers Medical, unfortunately you will not be unable to embark on a ship with Harding Retail.
Prior to embarkation for a first contract with Harding Retail all colleagues are required to attend an induction programme at our Central Support in Bristol, UK. The two day programme includes an overview of the company, an introduction to life at sea, training on our products, ASK and We Sail to Sell and on board safety policies.
During your induction you will be continually assessed. All offers of employment are subject to successful completion of the induction programme.
Life on-board a cruise ship is different to any living experience you’re likely to have had on land. It will be an experience of a lifetime and offer opportunities for a promising career. It will be incredibly exciting! You will be visiting new places, meeting new people, and creating memories along the way.
Each contract will be for a period of 6 months. After you complete your contract, you will have one month off before you return to sea for your next contract.
Whilst living on board you will share a cabin with someone of the same gender in the same department. Most cabins will consist of bunk beds and an en suite bathroom, as well as a TV, telephone and other basic amenities.
Working hours on board will vary depending on your itinerary; however you should be prepared to work 7 days a week.
On a sea day you will work a maximum of 14 hours per day. On most ships the shops will open at 9.00am and close at 11.00pm. You will be given a lunch and dinner break during these times.
During port times the shops will be closed. You will be able to disembark in port on average at two out of three port stops as there will be replenishment, floor moves and cycle counts to complete.
There are plenty of facilities on board for crew to enjoy in your free time. Some ships will have a crew pool, crew gym and a crew bar. There will be regular events held in the crew bar such as Bingo, Poker night, Discos and Karaoke.
Whilst you are on board your food will be provided. Food will be served buffet style in the Crew Mess. On some ships you will also be able to dine in the passenger areas at certain times.
